About this experience
Follow the sound of rushing water into one of the Smokies’ most refreshing guided hikes. Chasing Waterfalls is perfect for those chasing cascades, waterfalls, streams, mossy rocks, cool forest trails, and classic Smoky Mountain water scenery.
With an experienced naturalist guide, you’ll explore a lush mountain landscape shaped by water. Along the way, your guide may point out wildflowers, old-growth pockets, stream ecology, salamanders, forest plants, and the hidden details most visitors walk past. This tour is a strong choice for families, first-time visitors, photographers, summer guests, and anyone who wants a memorable waterfall hike without committing to a strenuous full-day adventure.

Planning perspective
How I’d plan this experience
If you want a guided Smokies walk where water is the main event, this hike looks like a focused way to spend three hours among cascades, streams and forest. I’d shortlist it for families with older children, waterfall photographers and first-time visitors who want a guide’s perspective without signing up for a full-day outing. The key decision is whether a moderate, sometimes wet trail—and driving your own vehicle to the trailhead—fits your plans.
A good fit if you want a proper walk, not just a viewpoint
The listed route is 2.5 miles with 900 feet of elevation change, so I’d treat “moderate” as meaningful rather than assume this is a casual stroll. The description also mentions uneven ground and climbing over downed trees. That makes it a better match for people comfortable moving over natural terrain than for anyone seeking a level, easy-access waterfall stop.
Children are listed as welcome from age eight, but age alone won’t determine whether the hike suits your family. I’d weigh each child’s stamina and confidence on uneven ground, and note that the tour is not recommended for people with certain health or pregnancy-related concerns.
Expect a mix of popular cascades and a quieter stretch
The route combines a popular trail with a less-traveled one, with several cascades along the way. I think that balance is the appeal: you get recognizable waterfall scenery, then a quieter section rather than a hike built around one single photo stop. In spring, the itinerary also calls out wildflowers; the guide may point out forest plants, salamanders and stream ecology, so there’s more to look for than the falls themselves.
Bring shoes you’re comfortable getting wet. The plan explicitly warns that you may get your feet wet, and it mentions climbing over fallen trees. I’d choose this over a drier, smoother outing only if those details sound like part of the fun, not a nuisance.
Plan for your own car and your own water
You meet at Sugarlands Visitors Center, then follow the guide in your own vehicle to the trailhead; transportation is not provided. That’s a meaningful logistical trade-off if you’re not driving or were expecting a shuttle. The trailhead drive is listed as 10 minutes from the meeting point, and you can decide after the hike whether to head out or explore the area further.
Snacks are included, but drinks are not. I’d bring plenty of water and rain protection rather than rely on the emergency ponchos mentioned in the details. A parking pass is required for vehicles stopping longer than 15 minutes in the national park, and the pass is not included.
Keep some flexibility in your day
The hike runs rain or shine, but the route may change because of road closures or other events, and the tour requires at least two people to operate. I’d avoid building an inflexible schedule around a particular cascade or route detail. For a small shared outing, the stated maximum is 11 travelers; that may appeal if you prefer a group hike that isn’t a large-coach excursion, though it is still a group rather than a private tour.
